Chapter 1
I always think Mathematic as an abstract discipline involving
complex algebraic formulas and geometric calculations. Yet, the foundations of
math are grounded in concrete experience such as the explorations of objects
and gradual understanding of their properties and relationships. The
cognitive concepts in classifications, seriation, numbers, time and space are
all an integral part of the development of maths knowledge. Children are
continually involved in mathematical learning which the Early Childhood
environment and teachers must encouraged.
But to succeed as a Maths teacher, they need to have a good
knowledge of Mathematics. Conventional content
knowledge is insufficient for skilfully handling the mathematical tasks of
teaching. Teaching is not merely about doing math oneself, but about helping
students learn to do it. This is challenging and requires specialized skilled
ways of knowing the domain
Persistence and have positive attitude towards Maths subject is
another aspects to consider when teaching . When teachers have mathematical
anxiety, it may severely disrupt their mathematical thinking and education.
Teacher need to accept changes and be more reflective in the way they teach to
response to the children's challenges.
Chapter 2
Maths for children is not abstract. It is the provision of many
materials that invite the child to handle, explore, compare, measure, combine,
take part, reconstruct and transform in an infinite variety of ways. By acting
on materials, children actively construct knowledge and gradually come to
understand mathematical principles.
An
important part of learning math is learning how to solve problems. Children are
encouraged to use trial and error to develop their ability to reason and to
learn how to go about problem solving. They learn that there may be more than
one way to solve a problem and more than one answer. They also learn to express
themselves clearly as they explain their solutions. Math skills are important
to a child's success , both at school and in everyday life. Understanding math
also builds confidence and opens the door to a range of career options.
